For ten years, my father worked as a New York DUI Attorney. He would sometimes work eighty-hour weeks, tirelessly going through case after case of DUIs (Driving Under the Influence) or DWIs (Driving While Intoxicated). Growing up in Manhattan, I didn't realize the impact his job as an attorney had on hundreds and hundreds of people.

My father's career as a New York DUI Attorney meant that he wasn't around much. He did, however, always warn me about the serious consequences of drinking and driving.

Over dinner, my father would scare my sisters and I with tales of minors having their license suspended, or even being sent to jail. "Don't give me that New York DUI lawyer bull," we would protest while sawing through our steaks.

As a rebellious teenager, I often frequented nightclubs, brandishing a fake I.D. that said I was from Idaho. One night, I had a few beers at a local dive bar and decided that, rather than pay the exorbitant taxi fare, I would drive home. When the police car pulled me over for weaving, I even had the nerve to say, "You'll be hearing from my father; he's a New York DUI Attorney."

Unsurprisingly, my father was less than impressed. "What's the big deal?" I asked, "you solve cases like this everyday." I had naively assumed that my father would act as my DUI Attorney. In the end, he did agree to represent me in court; however, I had to pay him his hourly rate of over 150 dollars an hour. I ended up having my license suspended for five months and paying bills to my father for over a year.

This incident taught me a valuable lesson and I never drank and drove again. In fact, when I was applying for Cornell I wrote my admission essay about drinking and driving; I entitled the essay "A New York DUI Attorney and his DUI Dunce of a Daughter." Despite the alliteration, I was accepted to the university.

While I attended Cornell, I joined a local campus lobby group (affiliated with Mother's Against Drunk Driving) that informed students about the perils of drinking and driving. I told the story of myself and my New York DUI Attorney father to other young people in the hope of helping them make better choices. Throughout the school year, we had advertising campaigns and charity events. I like to think we really made an impact.

Now, I am in my third year of law school at New York University. For the past two summers, I have been working at my father's New York DUI law firm. After I graduate, I hope to work as a New York DUI Attorney. Hopefully, I can help people who are facing charges of DUI or DWI to refine their lifestyle and make smarter choices in the future.
